Description

What's Covered in This Manual

This is the Operation and Tests manual (TM1434, dated 08MAR02, superseding the earlier JUL-91 edition) for the John Deere 8560, 8760 and 8960 4WD articulated tractors - part of John Deere's 60 Series articulated lineup - published by John Deere Waterloo Works as the diagnostic companion to the separate TM1433 Repair manual. Depending on which model and engine option your tractor carries, it runs either the 6076 engine (itself split into two Component Technical Manuals by serial number - CTM6 for machines built before serial number 500000, and CTM42 for those built from 500000 onward) or the larger 6101 engine (CTM20).

The manual's own revision notice is worth knowing about if you're trying to date your tractor's documentation: this edition added a dynamometer test and viscous fan drive correction chart, an explanation of voltage test readings for electrical and electronic circuits, hitch draft sensing circuits and harness routing, and replaced the axle/PTO lube pressure sensor with a hydraulic reservoir level sensor - meaning a tractor built later in the production run has meaningfully different sensors and circuits than an early one, even within the same model.

The hydraulic system section specifically notes a major design change partway through production: early model tractors used a full charge system with axle lube cooling run through a separate lube pump for each axle, while later model tractors switched to a return flow charge system with a single pump handling axle lube and cooling together - Product Information Numbers (PIN) are used throughout the hydraulic section to distinguish which procedures apply to which generation. Beyond the engine and hydraulics, the manual covers electrical operation and tests, the 12-speed Syncro and 24-speed Power Shift and POWRSYNC transmissions, PTO and axles, and steering and brakes. For anyone diagnosing an 8560, 8760, or 8960, this manual gives the complete testing path for whichever engine and production generation that specific tractor represents.
