John Deere's original dealer service manual SM-3021 for the 820 Series diesel tractor, built around the factory's distinctive two-cylinder diesel and separate cranking engine for cold starts. It gives full removal, repair and assembly instructions for every system, plus complete factory performance and capacity specifications, and most of it applies equally to the Model 80 tractor.

This manual (SM-3021, dated 4-57) is written for the John Deere 820 Series diesel tractor. The factory notes that much of the content applies equally, with minor variations, to the Model 80 tractor as well.
The 820's main engine is a two-cylinder, cast-in-block, valve-in-head diesel displacing 471.5 cubic inches, delivering around 67.5 belt horsepower. Because diesel engines of this era were hard to start cold, the 820 uses a separate four-cylinder, V-type gasoline "cranking engine" (18.85 cu in) purely to spin the diesel over until it fires - a detail this manual covers in its own section. The transmission offers six forward speeds and one reverse, with an automotive-type internal-expanding brake system and a hand-operated clutch using eight 9-1/4 inch dry disks.
Custom Powr-Trol detail is covered in the separate SM-2022 manual; power steering detail in SM-2016; fuel injection pump/nozzle testing in SM-2018; and generator/cranking motor testing in SM-2000. This is a vintage factory manual reproduced from the original 1957 printing.
