This manual (SM-2025, dated 9-58) is written for the John Deere 720 Series two-cylinder tractor, built in Gasoline, LP-Gas and All-Fuel versions. The factory states that most of the content applies equally to the Model 70 and 730 Series tractors, since the three share identical or near-identical components and procedures.
The engine is a two-cylinder, cast-in-block, valve-in-head design displacing 360.5 cubic inches, pressure-lubricated with a full-flow oil filter and governed by a flyweight-type governor. Belt horsepower ranges from 45.3 on the All-Fuel version to just under 60 on gasoline and LP-Gas. The tractor offers six forward speeds and one reverse, a dry-disk hand-operated clutch with six 10-inch disks, and either manual steering or optional hydraulic power steering. Custom Powr-Trol hydraulics, when fitted, use a position-responsive rockshaft or a rockshaft paired with one or two remote cylinders.
Electrical/ignition detail beyond removal and installation is covered in the separate SM-2026 Electrical Systems manual; power steering detail is in SM-2016; carburetors in SM-2024; and Custom Powr-Trol detail in SM-2022. This is a vintage factory manual reproduced from the original 1958 printing.
