This manual (TM1590, 01MAY95) is written for the John Deere 316, 318 and 420 lawn and garden tractors. All three use an Onan air-cooled gasoline engine: the 316 ran the B43E engine early on and the P218G later, the 318 ran the B43G and later the P218G, and the 420 ran the B48G and later the P220G. Horsepower ranges from 16 hp on the early 316 up to 20 hp on the 420.
John Deere splits this book into repair sections, which tell you how to take components apart and rebuild them, and checkout/diagnosis sections, which help you track down a failure before you start pulling parts. Serial number plate locations for the tractor, engine, transmission, differential and control valve are included so warranty and parts lookups go smoothly.
The 420 uses a 2-range hydrostatic transmission and a differential lock not fitted to the 316 or 318. Onan engine overhaul detail beyond removal and installation is in the separate Onan Engines (16, 18, 20, 24 HP) component manual, CTM2.
