This manual (TM-1142, dated Sep-75, with updates through Jan-78) covers the 2440 and 2640 tractors, serial numbers up to 340999. The 2440 is rated at 60.65 maximum PTO horsepower (45.23 kW) from its 4-cylinder, 219 cu in (3590 cm³) engine; the 2640 steps up to 70.0 PTO horsepower (52.2 kW) from a larger-bore 4-cylinder engine.
Both tractors use a Collar Shift transmission with 8 forward and 4 reverse speeds across high, low and reverse ranges, plus an optional Hi-Lo shift (hydraulic wet clutches, no clutching required) that drops ground speed about 21% while boosting pull by up to 27% in any gear, and a hydraulic Reverser giving reverse speeds 16% faster than the corresponding forward gear. Full ground speed charts at 2500 engine rpm are included for every gear in both Hi and Lo range.
Both tractors use planetary-reduction final drives with a spiral bevel gear differential and a hand- or foot-operated mechanical differential lock. Brakes are hydraulically actuated wet-disk type on both models. This is a vintage factory manual reproduced from the original 1975 printing.
