This is the Technical Manual (TM1426) covering six John Deere lawn and garden tractors at once: the 240 and 245, 260 and 265, and 285 and 320. These six models pair up by engine - the 240/245 run the Kawasaki FC420V, the 260/265 run the FC540V, and the 285/320 run the FD590V, with the 285/320 pair also getting its own dedicated fuel injection system section since that engine uses fuel injection rather than a carburetor.
The power train is the other place these models split: the 240 and 260 use a gear power train, while the 245, 265, 285 and 320 use a hydrostatic power train instead. The manual gives each power train type its own full section rather than assuming one design across the range, so check which transmission your tractor actually has before following the power train repair procedures.
Beyond the engine and power train differences, the manual is organized the standard John Deere small-equipment way: specifications, component location, system schematics, theory of operation, troubleshooting charts, diagnostics, tests and adjustments, and repair, applied across the electrical system, steering, hydraulics, and general miscellaneous repair. Published by John Deere's Worldwide Commercial and Consumer Equipment Division out of Horicon, Wisconsin, this manual gives a technician everything needed to diagnose and repair any of these six tractors correctly, with the right engine and power train procedures for whichever specific model is on the lift.
